Environmental Saving Award

The Environmental Saving Award have been handed over every year by the Hungarian Environmental Minister since 2003 to the best measures at the annual conference of KÖVET in October. The award -a tree decorated with amazonite-stones - is not only a sign of moral recognition, but the owners of this prize also qualify to the European Business Award for the Environment competition of the European Union.

The Environmental Savings Awards are given in three categories every year. The categories are differed according to the payback period of the measures. There are immediately remunerative changes (which don’t need investment), measures that payback in three years, and investments with a payback period more than three years. The investments having a payback period less than three years are called „low hanging fruits”. Based on this fruit-tree comparison, we call the investments with long payback period „high hanging fruits”. The measures that do not need any investment are called „washed fruits on the table”. Since 2007, the immediately remunerative „washed fruits on the table” category has been changed to the category of SME-s, encouraging the smaller companies to apply for the Award, and emphasising that environmental savings can not only be found at big companies.

The template for the case-study can be downloaded here.
Deadline for the application is 31 July 2007.

Selection of the winners

  • The measure must have environmental and economic benefit at the same time.
  • We give the award to measures, not companies.
  • The bigger environmental and economic benefit is the better.
  • It gives an advantage if the company cares for general awareness raising too (e.g. greening the office work), and not only deals with the technology.
  • The applications are evaluated by a jury.

The jury in 2007 was:

  • Jóri Zoltán, Contitech Rubber Industrial Ltd., safety and EMS manager
  • Szabó Gábor, HVG press
  • Vrannai Katalin, Figyelő press
  • Tóth Gergely, secretary-general, KÖVET
  • Kapusy Pál, general director, KÖVET
